Have you ever woken up with a sense of excitement because of where you were going that day? I remember the day my wife and I went on a trip to Milford Sound in New Zealand. It’s a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains and wondrous views. Even though we had a long journey ahead, and even though it was an early start and was very cold, we were up, ready, and looking forward to it – because we believed where we were heading was going to be worth it.
It’s exciting to go to places you’ve never been before, to go further.
I remember another day when I also had no trouble getting out of bed. It was a day I would start a different kind of journey. After many years of waiting, months of planning, speeches written, caterers booked, bags packed: I was getting married. We were about to start a journey that wasn’t about going to a place, but was about a deepening relationship. A different kind of journey.
Why am I telling you this? Because I really believe that God wants us to all embark on a journey of life with Him that takes us both further and deeper with God. God Himself promises to lead us, and be with us.
Psalm 23 says:
The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.
God leads us in the journey of this life as the ultimate guide. He helps us find peace, He helps us make the right decisions, He leads us through the tough times and never leaves us. It’s a journey that starts by saying yes to God and continuing to say yes – day by day, step by step. There are new places to go to, new people to meet, new adventures of faith still to be had! God takes us further, but also leads us to new depths of knowing Him. He is with us all the way.
Journeys start with the most ordinary of things. We put one foot in front of the other and before we know it we can look back and see how far we’ve come and take in the sights. Just like the daily reading of His word and praying “Your will be done”, step by step we go further, we go deeper. Let’s seek Him for our next step and trust that He will lead us to a place where our “cup overflows” with confidence that “surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life” (Psalm 23:5-6). Now that’s a journey worth getting out of bed for!
What’s your next step?
