Daniel Habtey

Daniel Habtey joined the church leadership in 2014.

He has been the leader of our Eritrean Fellowship since 2010 but is also involved with other aspects of ministry including preaching, prayer ministry and visitation with a particular passion to see second and third generation integration into main church life.

In 2002 Daniel fled persecution for being a Christian from his native country of Eritrea, along with his wife Senayit and six-month old daughter, travelling for several months through Sudan, across the Sahara Desert to Libya and then on to Italy. He had been a full time pastor in Eritrea, a position not recognised by the government, until he was taken against his will and put in a military camp when all evangelical and pentecostal churches in Eritrea were closed down, when Daniel, like many other Christians at the time and since, fled the country for safety.

Daniel has since been given quite a public voice on issues of global asylum, interviewed on national media and visiting such places as Ethiopia and Lampedusa, Italy.

He is married to Senayit and they have two daughters and a son.

Oasis Centre

Merton Street

Oasis CentreThe Oasis Youth and Community Centre was for many years the only church building owned by the Elim Pentecostal Church. The purchasing of a new worship centre, Grace Centre, in 2008 meant that the church premises in Merton Street are more available for the church’s mission to the community. Regular meetings at Oasis Centre include those for our kids, youth, senior citizens and asylum seekers.

The building has been used by various voluntary and community organisations over the years and is now more available to be more widely used by the community of Springwood and beyond.

Oasis is a common name for Elim Centres because the name Elim comes from an Oasis. In the Old Testament we read that the Israelites, having been freed from slavery in Egypt, were travelling through the wilderness and,

“...they came to Elim, where there were twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees: so they camped there by the waters."
    Exodus 15:27

Elim has always been a place of refreshment and we see our building in Merton Street being used as a place of physical and spiritual refreshment, for different age groups in our church, but also for the multicultural community in which it is located.

Grace CentreWhen we acquired our new church building in October 2008 we decided to rename it Grace Centre. It is hard to find a name that conveys to the total outsider everything we do in our church building but the word 'grace' is an important one and we need to remind ourselves what it means to us.

Grace is an undeserved gift and salvation comes as a gift from God not as a result of our good works. But God’s grace does not stop at our salvation, He gives more grace (James 4:6), that grace abounds (Romans 5:20), it is sufficient for our every need (2 Corinthians 12:9) and in it we can grow and develop (2 Peter 3:18). Every time we enter the Grace Centre we should be reminded of God’s goodness towards us. It is our prayer and expectation that in our church building many people will receive the same undeserved gift and be saved by God’s grace.

"For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves it is the gift of God: not of works lest any man should boast."
Ephesians 2:8&9

* Please note there is limited car parking space behind Grace Centre. On Sunday mornings these are reserved for those with mobility problems. There is some on-road parking on St John's Road. Pay and display car parks in Bath Street and Cambridge Road are only a short walk away but on Sundays there is a charge between 12noon and 6.00pm. We actively encourage those attending the 9.15am service to park in St John's Road car park as it is free at that time.
